Inspection Process
Surface finishing services—what we apply and when
Surface finishing changes corrosion resistance, wear, conductivity, cosmetics, or friction after machining or molding—anodize, plating, passivate, powder, polish, bead blast, and more.
Choose a finish quote with the parent part RFQ so masking, rack marks, and dimensional growth are planned—not discovered at receiving.
Partsproto coordinates finishing in China for overseas buyers; critical dims before/after finish should be stated on the print.
- → Anodize / hardcoat on aluminum
- → Zinc, nickel, or other plating on steel
- → Passivate stainless; black oxide
- → Cosmetic blast / polish / brush
Finishing workflow
Spec & mask plan
Confirm finish type, thickness, color, and keep-out zones.
Pre-clean
Machine oils removed; plug threads if required.
Finish process
Anodize/plate/passivate/blast as ordered.
Post-check
Thickness, color, adhesion sampling as scoped.
Pack
Scratch protection for cosmetics; export labels.
DFM tips for surface finishes
- •Call thickness and which dims are before vs after finish.
- •Mark masking on threads, ground fits, and electrical grounds.
- •Hard anodize grows and can crack sharp edges—radii help.
- •Different alloys anodize to different colors—name the alloy.
- •Cosmetic class: define viewing distance and reject criteria.
Inspection & QC on finishes
- ✓Thickness sampling when specified.
- ✓Visual against agreed cosmetic standard.
- ✓Adhesion / tape tests when required.
- ✓Salt spray or other tests only when contracted.
- ✓Before/after critical dim checks when growth matters.
Lead time & batch sizing
Many anodize/passivate lots add several days to machining lead time; specialty plating and colors can add more. Batch with other parts when possible. Tell us if finish is on the critical path for your overseas launch.
Surface finishes FAQ
Can you match a color chip?
Often yes for anodize/powder within process limits—send a chip and alloy.
Will plating change thread fit?
Yes if not planned. Tell us sequence (cut undersize vs chase after).
Do you finish parts machined elsewhere?
Sometimes—send material, current state, and print. We may require a sample.
Export packing for cosmetics?
Yes—layer films and edge protection for overseas freight.
